The call to participate in the second edition of "Ambassadors for Science" is now open
After the positive impact of the first edition of “Ambassadors for Science” in 2016, this shadowing scheme between scientists and diplomats comes back with a second edition that will be carried out in the United Kingdom between September 2017 and January 2018.
The aim of “Ambassadors for Science” is to bring together scientists and diplomats to get them exposed to their different worlds—science and diplomacy—, thus enabling them to find common grounds that could foster lateral thinking and better science diplomacy. For a few days, both professionals will receive introductory seminars, visit their respective workplaces and share their joint experiences.
To participate in this scheme, the call is open from 2nd June to 30th June 2017, with all information made available on https://www.fecyt.es/en/info/ambassadors-science.
Any scientist from the fields of sciences, technology, engineering, arts and humanities, medicine and mathematics, who work in either the academic or private sector, and who live in the United Kingdom, may submit their application.
The impact of the first edition was very positive between all participants and institutions involved. At the international level, “Ambassadors for Science” has been highlighted in three international reports: “Tools for an EU Science Diplomacy” by Dr Luk van Langenhoven, “Connecting Scientists to Policy around the World” by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and “Europe’s future: Open Innovation, Open Science, Open to the world” by the RISE group. These reports all highlight the scheme as an innovative practice both to bring closer science and diplomacy and to foster a culture based on science-advice.
This pilot scheme will continue in the Embassy of Spain in London during 2017 with the aim of being extended to other diplomatic missions and even to the Congreso de los Diputados and other institutions in Spain.
“Ambassadors for Science” is organised by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the Spanish Embassy in London, with the support of the Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU).
